NY Route 103
< NY 102 NY 104 >

New York State Route 103 is a 0.50-mile (0.80 km)New York Routes - New York State Route 103 long state highway in Schenectady County, New York. The route runs from a Y intersection with NY 5S in the hamlet of Rotterdam Junction across the Mohawk River/Erie Canal at Lock 9 to NY 5 in the town of Rotterdam. At just one-half mile, NY 103 is one of the shortest state highways in New York. Nearly perfectly straight, NY 103 leaves NY 5S and heads northeast toward the canal. After a slight bend to the left, NY 103 crosses over the lock, passing by access to a fishing and recreation area, before ending at a traffic signal for NY 5. One-third of the route is composed of the bridge over Lock 9 of the Erie Canal.

Until the creation of NY 890, NY 103 was the only crossing of the river/canal that existed between Amsterdam and Schenectady. The route was thus part of one of two primary links between Amsterdam and Interstate 890; the other being the tolled New York State Thruway. West of NY 103, NY 5 is four lanes wide, compared to two on NY 5S; east of NY 103, NY 5S connected directly to I-890 while NY 5 went through Scotia before crossing the Mohawk in Schenectady. Adding a complication was that the bridge on NY 103 had a steel deck, which was slippery when wet and reduced the weight limit of the bridge.

With the completion of the NY 890 bridge over the Mohawk River, NY 103 ceased to have the same importance as before. It was temporarily closed, and the bridge was reconstructed to have its current concrete deck. Today, NY 103 remains and is the only access to Lock 9 of the Erie Canal, with its picnic and fishing area.
